Costa Rica Sustainable Fishing Areas Seek Partners for Development

Costa Rica Sustainable Fishing Areas Seek Partners for DevelopmentThe Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The initiative, which will benefit some 700 families of fishermen, was made official on Friday October 25th with the signing of an agreement between the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Incopesca) and the Foundation for the Development and Promotion of Research and Transfer Agricultural Technology of Costa Rica (FITTACORI).

The project is looking for private companies that wish to contribute to the protection and development of sustainable fishing marine areas.
“The responsible fishing marine areas are born as an initiative whose success depends largely on the active participation of fishermen. Now, private companies need to take social responsibility towards these communities and become partners to assist with the social and economic development of these populations,” said Gloria Abraham, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).
Members may make contributions monthly, are voluntary, and can be chosen according to their interests to the fishing marina area they want to support, even when there is already one or more members registered for that area.
The first program partner is Pro-Health Food (Sardimar), who is providing a grant of $ 50,000 for Palito-Montero communities that rely almost entirely on fishing related activities.
The program currently consists of six marine areas:  Palito-Montero, Horse Island, Golfo Dulce, San Juanillo, Medlar and Tarcoles, which cover a total area of more than 940 square kilometers. In the training process are Coast Birds, Paquera and Isla Venado.
Interested companies can find more information about this program at www.incopesca.go.cr  or  www.fittacori.org , or call 2248-1130 and 2231-4764
