Thank You!!! 2013 November meeting.

Thank you to the Developers and Lot owners who called in for tonight's conference.  As anticipated, there were 6 announced call in's and approximately three anonymous call in's.   Our success is based on dues being paid and engaged developers and lot owners.  Through the past 4 years we have maintained a high level of success on both fronts and should be glad to know our mutual investments are being maintained by a majority.  Here's to now and 2014.

Detailed minutes of the meeting will be emailed and later posted to the blog/f/b.  Thank you, again.  Kurt

Costa Rica Sustainable Fishing Areas Seek Partners for Development

Costa Rica Sustainable Fishing Areas Seek Partners for DevelopmentThe Costa Rica News (TCRN) – The initiative, which will benefit some 700 families of fishermen, was made official on Friday October 25th with the signing of an agreement between the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Incopesca) and the Foundation for the Development and Promotion of Research and Transfer Agricultural Technology of Costa Rica (FITTACORI).

The project is looking for private companies that wish to contribute to the protection and development of sustainable fishing marine areas.
“The responsible fishing marine areas are born as an initiative whose success depends largely on the active participation of fishermen. Now, private companies need to take social responsibility towards these communities and become partners to assist with the social and economic development of these populations,” said Gloria Abraham, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).
Members may make contributions monthly, are voluntary, and can be chosen according to their interests to the fishing marina area they want to support, even when there is already one or more members registered for that area.
The first program partner is Pro-Health Food (Sardimar), who is providing a grant of $ 50,000 for Palito-Montero communities that rely almost entirely on fishing related activities.
The program currently consists of six marine areas:  Palito-Montero, Horse Island, Golfo Dulce, San Juanillo, Medlar and Tarcoles, which cover a total area of more than 940 square kilometers. In the training process are Coast Birds, Paquera and Isla Venado.
Interested companies can find more information about this program at www.incopesca.go.cr  or  www.fittacori.org , or call 2248-1130 and 2231-4764

SJE Long Over Due Update

Hello All – I am sorry for the lapse in communication.  As always, life – good or bad – gets in the way!  Fortunately, all my delays are based on good things  (Welcoming of my Fourth Child, Home Renovation and Total Corporate Restructuring) but things that have been keeping me busy since May.

It is time that we focus on Costa Rica!  This year has been uneventful but no dues have been collected for the first time in four years.  The final portion of the 2012 collected dues was transferred May 6, 2013.

One of the things completed in 2013 was the opening of an account in Costa Rica for HOA dues.  The suggested dues for 2013 are $600.00 per Lot owned.  Please transfer your dues to the below account*.  Please email me once you have completed the transaction.  Please remember to remit the transfer fee of $20.00, as well.

At the close of 2013, I will no longer be the President of the HOA and Jim Bowlder will no longer be the Treasure.  Our four years of volunteering is up!  We need to meet to have nominations for all four posts – President / VP /Treasurer and Secretary (Mike Cothran and David Morgan have been acting as defacto VP And Secretary), discuss any issues and share information.

I am suggesting the evening of Tuesday November 19th at 6:30 PM EST.  This will allow me to close up 2013 finances and gather information to share.  It will also give our Admin and the Developers the time to do the same.  Unless there is any outstanding questions or strong opposition, I will send and invite out by weekend.

Thank you all for helping to secure our investments by participating in the HOA.  Please let me know of any questions or concerns.  Kurt

Costa Rica seeks to close both public zoos

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Rican officials say they plan to close both of the country's public zoos next year so that animals can be freed from their cages. But the foundation that runs the animal parks said Saturday it is trying to keep them operating.
Environment Minister Rene Castro announced in recent days that the 97-year-old Simon Bolivar zoo in central San Jose will become a botanical park next year. Another zoo west of the city, the Santa Ana Conservation Center, also would close. Together they hold 400 animals of 60 species, including a lion, crocodiles, monkeys and a tapir.
The Environment Ministry said the animals would be released into the wild or sent to rescue centers.
The foundation that runs the zoos, known as Fundazoo, has asked an administrative tribunal to block the closure, foundation spokesman Eduardo Bolanos said Saturday. It argues that its contract to run the zoos has been renewed through 2024.
"We're worried about where the ministry is thinking of moving the animals since the Simon Bolivar and the Conservation Center are the only ones that have a veterinarian specialized in forest species and an animal nutritionist," Bolanos said.

Costa Rica banned circuses with animals in 2002 and has also barred sport hunting.

2013 SJE HOA Update

Hello All -
If we have not spoke recently, I hope you are well.  Recently, we transfered the final 2012 collected dues to our SJO HOA account.  There are still some poeple who owe 2010, 2011 and 2012 but an amazingly small number of total lot owners.  We should be collectively proud.  Soon, the HOA will send a more detailed update via email and post to the blog and facebook so, stay tuned.  In the meantime, please feel free to contact Kurt Becker at kurt.becker@cjbinc.com if you have any questions or concerns.  Thank you!

Recently, the Board of the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INCOPESCA) agreed to declare San Juanillo as a Marine Area of Responsible Fisheries, in order to protect the marine resources of this small community of fishermen.
This was announced by Luis Dobles Ramirez, Executive Chairman of INCOPESCA, who said that the area is in the coastal waters off San Juanillo of Cuajiniquil, Santa Cruz, in an area of ??approximately 56.2 square kilometers.
"The declaration directly benefits 31 people of the Fishermen's Association of San Juanillo, as well as over 50 fishermen from neighboring communities such as Lagarto, Punta Guiones, Nosara and Playa Pelada. It will also indirectly benefit the area adjacent to the National Wildlife Refuge in Ostional" commented Ramirez Doubles.

The agreement was made in a regular session of the Board of INCOPESCA, on February 15, and it states that the Fishermen's Association will coordinate and implement appropriate actions to carry out fishing activities by its members in pursuit of sustainable use of fisheries resources. It also establishes the creation of a Monitoring Committee for the proper management of the area.

Surprised? Study says Costa Rica is the safest country in Latin America

pura vida on the beach
March 21st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica is the safest country in Latin America, according to a study published yesterday by publisher-analyst, InfoLatAm.

The study positions Venezuela and Haiti as being the most violent countries in the region.  Venezuela has seen a constant increase in its homicide rate, still the highest in Latin America after Honduras.

The ranking of 19 countries is based on data from public security departments, local police, governments, NGOs, and institutions responsible for crime investigation.

Mario Zamora, Costa Rica’s Minister of Public Security said that the data matches the fact that authorities here have seen a decrease in reported crimes in recent times.

Meanwhile, Minister of Communication, Francisco Chacon said that the government is fulfilling its promise of citizen security.

The report notes that Latin America is still considered an unsafe region, scoring 3.6 on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 represents the safest regions and 5 the most dangerous.
